Today marks five years since the first eruption at Fagradalsfjall began in Geldingadalir on Iceland’s Reykjanes Peninsula – ending an 800-year silence and reshaping the landscape on the peninsula ever since. What followed was a series of powerful eruptions that I have documented closely over the years. Fittingly, I was invited to speak at The Photography & Video Show in Birmingham, where I shared my experience photographing five years of volcanic activity in Iceland. To mark the occasion, I also released a brand new video showcasing these eruptions and the dramatic evolution of this unique volcanic region.
I had an excellent time at The Photography Show and spent a lot of time looking around.
It was great to meet so many different people whether they were new or familiar faces.
I may even have bought a “new” camera!
Speaking At The Photography Show In Birmingham
This weekend I had the pleasure to be speaking at The Photography Show, which takes place annually in the United Kingdom. This year’s edition was located in Birmingham at the NEC halls. I had always wanted to visit The Photography Show, and being allowed to speak on their Behind The Lens stage was definitely a great excuse. The stage’s capacity is over 200 people and I was really happy to see it was completely packed. During my lecture I spoke about the five most significant moments for my photography during the last five years of photographing eruptions. For the occassion, I had updated my lecture with a lot of new material and a brand new introduction video, which you can see below.
Thank you to all of you who showed up and engaged with me after the lecture!
Special thanks to Rhiannon Lawler for having her camera handy and capturing a few photographs during my lecture.
Book Me To Speak At Your Next Photography Event Or Camera Club
Fresh from speaking at The Photography & Video Show, I have once again been reminded how powerful it is to share stories, experiences, and real-world insights with a live audience. Whether I’m on a large international stage or speaking to a small, passionate camera club, my goal is always the same: to inspire photographers to look beyond the image and connect more deeply with the story behind it.
If you’re organising a photography event, festival, or camera club talk, I offer engaging lectures that combine visual storytelling with practical knowledge. Everything I share is based on years of experience working in some of the most remote environments on Earth, from photographing erupting volcanoes here in Iceland to exploring the ice-filled landscapes of Greenland and Antarctica. Every talk can be tailored to your audience, whether you’re looking to inspire beginners or offer fresh perspective to more experienced photographers.
A Brand-New Video: Every Iceland Volcano Eruption Since 2021
To celebrate my lecture, and how well it went, I decided to update one of my videos which I use to introduce my lecture. The video showcases some of my favourite clips of the last five years of eruptions on the Reykjanes Peninsula in Iceland. The video combines footage from the Geldingadalir eruption, Meradalir eruption, Litli-Hrútur eruption and several of the eruptions at Svartsengi. Enjoy!
Discover Some Of My Other Volcano Content
Over the years I have published quite a lot of content about the eruptions. Not just on my social media channels, but also on my blog and in a dedicated volcano photo gallery on my website.
New Earth: My Photography Book About The First Eruption
When the Geldingadalir eruption of Fagradalsfjall started on March 19th 2021, I was there with my camera to experience and capture this volcanic event from a front row seat. It was the beginning of a genuine photographic journey which exceeded all my expectations. In this book, I share my collection of images taken from day one until the very last day of the eruption. The photographs are strengthened by sharing the story about my experiences whilst photographing the eruption.
The book combines my photography of the eruption with interesting stories on how those photographs came to be. I also share how this volcanic event left a big impact on me personally and how my experience began evolving together with the eruption.
What People Are Saying About New Earth
“This has to be the ‘go to’ book on a crazy last 9 months in an even crazier country. The photography is incredible but the words that go with it is where Jeroen has taken it to the next level.” – Jacob
“It is excellent how it captures the feelings, moments and thoughts that also I had during the time at the volcano.” – Glacionaut
“I kept saying “wow” throughout! A fantastic book for anyone who visited Geldingadalir, wanted to but couldn’t, or anyone with a passion for volcanoes who’d appreciate witnessing the story of this incredible eruption. Magical!” – Lesley
“Highly recommended from someone who has had the chance to experience over 15 volcano eruptions and owns 45 books about volcanoes, so I can safely say that I can distinguish the wheat from the chaff.” – John
