UPDATE: New Earth has been released and can be purchased on my website!

Today I have something very special to share with you all, something I’m very proud of. The past three months I have been quietly and tirelessly working on my first photography book, which will be titled “New Earth”. It’s the result of a great passion for exploring nature and photography. As you might have guessed, the book is about the eruption in Geldingadalir on the Reykjanes Peninsula here in Iceland – with a twist. To collect the funds to get it printed, I decided to use crowdfunding through Karolina Fund, an Icelandic crowdfunding website.

What is “New Earth” & what can you expect?

New Earth” will be a 136-page, uniquely personal, photography- and experience-focused book about the volcanic eruption. The book will be a full colour, hard-cover book in a 240x170mm format. The photographs are printed in 4 colours and finished with a matte lamination.

When the eruption started, I was there with my camera to experience and capture this volcanic event from a front row seat. It was the beginning of a genuine photographic journey for me which exceeded all my expectations. When the eruption had been ongoing for 2 months, I started realising I had not only accumulated many beautiful photographs but also numerous once-in-a-lifetime experiences. The book will combine my photography with interesting stories on how those photographs came to be. Most photographs also come with the settings they were taken at to give you an insight into how the shot was achieved. I also share how this volcanic event left a big impact on me personally and how my experience started evolving together with the eruption.

I started writing and designing this book in June which I’ve worked on tirelessly since. The book only needs a bit more proofreading at this stage. It has been written and designed. This means it will be ready for print once the crowdfunding campaign is over.

How will you publish it?

I have decided to self-publish this book completely. But, because printing books in large quantities is expensive, I’ve decided to use crowdfunding to make this project come to life. I decided to organise the crowdfunding through Karolina Fund, an Icelandic crowdfunding website.

What is crowdfunding?

Crowdfunding is a way for me to gather funds to pay for the cost of printing my book. People can fund my book by buying rewards, or simply by donating money. Therefor you can look at this as a sort of presale. You can, for example, fund a single book. When the crowdfunding campaign has finished and the books have been printed, I will send you your reward. The whole crowdfunding campaign relies on me reaching the funding goal or more within 31 days. If I don’t reach that goal, you will get your money back. This is a risk-free way for you and me to realise this project.

Why should I fund the book & how can I do it?

Funding the printing and publication of this book allows me to self-publish my first photography book, which has been a long-time dream of mine as a nature photographer.

You can fund the book by going to the crowdfunding campaign page on Karolina Fund’s website. There you can either simply fund an amount of your choosing or you can fund specified amounts which will give you a reward.

What are the rewards for funding the book?

I’ve set up several rewards:

  • 1x “New Earth” – This will give you a single copy of “New Earth”. If desired, the book will be autographed and your name will be mentioned on a special acknowledgments page inside the book.

  • 2x “New Earth” – This will give you a two copies of “New Earth”. If desired, the book will be autographed and your name will be mentioned on a special acknowledgments page inside the book.

  • 1x “New Earth” & a 50x70cm Poster – This will give you a single copy of “New Earth” together with a 50x70cm poster of a photograph of choice. If desired, the book will be autographed and your name will be mentioned on a special acknowledgments page inside the book.

  • 3x “New Earth” – This will give you a three copies of “New Earth”. If desired, the book will be autographed and your name will be mentioned on a special acknowledgments page inside the book.

  • 4x “New Earth” – This will give you a four copies of “New Earth”. If desired, the book will be autographed and your name will be mentioned on a special acknowledgments page inside the book.

  • 1x “New Earth” & a Private Guided Hike to the Eruption With Jeroen – This will give you a single copy of “New Earth” and a private guided tour to the eruption (or an alternative location if the eruption stops) together with me as your guide. If desired, the book will be autographed and your name will be mentioned on a special acknowledgments page inside the book.

What will the book look like?

I’ve already made a few mock-ups so you can see what you will receive when funding.
