The glacier in this photograph towering above the valley, is called Mýrdalsjökull, which covers a sleeping giant: the Katla volcano.
Back in 2013 I flew to Iceland on a very impulsive 3-day trip. Seeing the lights was my only goal. I spent my time during the day chasing a hole in the clouds. I drove until the sun set & ended up being lucky enough to capture this shot at this, now very famous, plane wreck. I faced the harsh winter conditions Iceland can throw at you: -15°C & the icy northerly wind blowing over the frozen sands - testing my endurance. Totally worth it when you're able to capture a shot like this! (ISO100 - F/1.8 - 8s)

I captured this image of Gullfoss during a very cold but nice winter day, while guiding a friend around. For the longest time I hadn't really experienced first-hand why this was called the Golden Waterfall until I witnessed a sunset while overlooking the waterfall.

One of the most curious things about Iceland must be that the earth is "alive" all around you. Almost the whole country is covered with geothermal areas where the ground hot and, sometimes, even boiling. It's a very strange experience to stand in such locations and experience it first-hand.

Glacial rivers in Iceland put up an incredible display when viewed from above. It's hard to imagine what it's like until you see one for yourself. This river reminds me of a big, but moving, piece of marble. It is just a small fragment of an enormous area where this glacial river braids itself through the land.

I really love this part of the highlands. There's so much to discover: craters, colourful hill sides, lakes, lava fields, ... Around every bend there's something new and exciting to photograph.

A beautiful waterfall off-the-beaten path in the Southern Highlands.
A big explosion crater at the Gunnuhver geothermal area on Reykjanes Peninsula.
As goes in summer, it’s better to explore at night. Not only are there fewer people about, but the light is also much nicer as well. This was taken along the Landmannaleið highland road. The area is filled with beautiful craters and tiny rivers. A real photographer’s paradise, especially when you don’t have to share it with anyone else.⁠

This beautiful blue lake is a gem you can find in the Fjallabak area. I was fortunate enough to visit it during a mysterious and colourful evening drive in the area. If you look closely, you can even spot my trusty white Land Rover in the photo.
A 4x4 adventure in the frozen and snowy area of Þórsmörk. It can be tricky to get there during winter but totally worth the effort.
A 3-shot vertical panorama, taken with the DJI Mavic Pro 2, of Stakkholtsgjá canyon in Þórsmörk. This place is exceptional during winter time which is probably one of the reasons it was used as a set for Game of Thrones.

This drone shot was made around 4am near Langisjór, a beautiful lake in the Icelandic highlands. You can see the glowing night sun warm up the peaks of the nearby mountains. It's such a beautiful area and the play of light & clouds that night made it all the more special.

Driving around in the vast, black emptiness of these sand & ash planes in the highlands is beyond anything you could ever imagine. Fortunately, by driving during the night, I managed to add a little midnight sun to it to liven up the photograph. I really love the contrast between the dark and light here.
The highlands are such a magical place. It's hard to describe in words and photographs what travelling around in this untamed area of Iceland feels like. The play between light, clouds and majestic landscapes makes you feel like you are running around in a fantasy movie set. The photograph shows the sunrise close to Langisjór, a lake in the southern highlands. The mountain peak you can spot is Sveinstindur - the highest mountain in the area.
Taken at 3am, this photograph gives you a glimpse at the majestic shows you can behold when staying awake in the highlands.
The magical land behind the mighty Eyjafjallajökull and Myrdalsjökull glaciers.
The amazing Tungnaá river located deep in the Icelandic highlands. This glacial river originates on the western side of the massive Vatnajökull glacier. Because it springs from all the melt water coming from the glacier, it creates these beautiful river braids.

A bird's eye view of the massive Markarfljót river, taken during an early winter sunrise. The structures, patterns and flows of the braided rivers in Iceland never seize to amaze me.

The weather can be so unpredictable in Iceland and, if you’re lucky, that can result in incredibly unexpected dream scenarios for photography. I managed to capture this shot after driving for 2 hours in the thickest fog I have experienced so far. You couldn’t see more than 5-6 metres in front of the car. All of a sudden, I noticed there was a clearing in the clouds behind a mountain. The moment lasted for maybe 10 minutes before the clouds engulfed the whole scenery again. Sometimes it’s all about time and luck.

When I captured this shot, the fox came as close as 2 metres from my lens, allowing me to make this incredible close-up. No cropping involved!

This photograph is a good reminder of why I will never have my camera hidden too far away - even when taking a break. When I took this shot, I was having a sandwich for lunch overlooking the ice lagoon. All of a sudden a seal came floating by on a tiny block of ice. The perfect play between the thin veil of fog and the silhouette of the seals makes for an awesome photograph. The moment lasted maybe 1 minute before the seal decided to dive back into the water again.

By far one of the biggest surprises, during my adventure in Svalbard, was my encounter with some of the walrus. The behaviour of these curious giant blubber-creatures nature made for some interesting photographs, like this close-up. To my big surprise, they were also incredibly agile when in the water, something I could not suspect when witnessing their slow and lazy lifestyle on the beach.

I was very fortunate to photograph & experience this curious guy up close while visiting a small beach in the middle of Forlandsundet in Spitsbergen, Svalbard. This one was so interested in us that, even though we kept a safe distance, he kept coming closer and closer to us to see what we were up to.

Deep dive! A humpback whale swimming near the town of Húsavík in North Iceland. It’s probably one of the best location in Iceland to see these gentle giants.
Photographers are not the only ones trying to enjoy a little bit of the midnight sun magic. These couple of wild swans was swimming down the fjord in this beautiful light.

The shape, crevasses and curves of a glacier, as you can see it from the air, always speak to my imagination. I just love these patterns and textures. This shot is a 3-shot vertical panorama stitched together to get a good glimpse of it.
