Iceland Volcano Webcam FAQ
Is Iceland’s Volcano Erupting Right Now?
Check the current eruption status panel near the top of this page. The status is verified against the Icelandic Met Office (vedur.is) on the date shown next to the heading.
Where Is The Volcano Erupting In Iceland?
Recent eruptions have all taken place along the Sundhnúkagígar crater row on the Reykjanes peninsula, roughly 4 km east of the Blue Lagoon and 3 km north of Grindavík. The closest international airport, Keflavík, sits about 20 km west.
How Many Eruptions Have Happened At Sundhnúkagígar?
Nine eruptions have occurred along the Sundhnúkagígar crater row since December 2023. The Met Office considers further eruptions likely as long as magma keeps accumulating beneath Svartsengi.
Are The Iceland Volcano Webcams Live 24/7?
Yes. The RÚV, MBL and Veðurstofa feeds embedded on this page run continuously. Image quality depends on daylight, weather and any volcanic ash in the air. The Veðurstofa fibre-optic feed shows seismic data rather than a visual stream.
Which Iceland Volcano Webcam Shows The Eruption Best?
For the fissure itself, the RÚV Sýlingarfell (South) camera typically gives the closest line of sight to the erupting crater row. The RÚV Mosaic view is the best starting point because it shows all four RÚV cameras at once, useful when activity is moving along the row.
Can I Visit An Active Volcanic Eruption In Iceland?
Access depends on official safety assessments by the Icelandic authorities. Most recent eruptions have been closed to visitors due to gas, lava-flow risk and infrastructure on the lava field. I run private guided hikes whenever an eruption is deemed safe; sign up to the photography workshop waitlist to be notified.
Is The Blue Lagoon Open During Eruptions?
The Blue Lagoon repeatedly closes when seismic activity at Svartsengi ramps up and reopens once the authorities lift restrictions. Check the Blue Lagoon’s own status page before travelling.

Do You Want To Visit An Active Volcanic Eruption?
Interested in joining Jeroen on a guided hike to an active volcano? While recent eruptions have not been deemed safe enough to visit, it sometimes happens you can visit an active eruption. If and when a volcanic eruption occurs that is accessible, Jeroen will offer private guided hikes to that eruption. The best way to stay informed on when that occurs is by signing up to the photography workshop waitlist.
