Iceland workshops run in three seasons: autumn for colour, winter for ice and aurora, and summer for the volcanic highlands and midnight light. Greenland trips visit iceberg-dense fjords in east and west by boat. Antarctica is a single 2028 expedition to the Peninsula and South Georgia, combining wildlife and landscape across one voyage.

Witnessing the UNESCO Ilulissat Icefjord and Disko Bay in person is definitely one of those once-in-a-lifetime experiences. It’s arguably one of the most impressive and most beautiful environments of the Arctic. The whole ocean surrounding the town of Ilulissat is covered in icebergs of all shapes and size - some even as large as a whole apartment building. A bucket list item for many landscape photographers for sure!

Which Season Suits Your Iceland Landscape Photography?

Summer opens the volcanic highlands completely: interior tracks that stay closed the rest of the year swing open, and near-endless daylight around the solstice creates shooting windows that simply don’t exist at other times of year. Highland trips typically run June through August, when the interior roads are open and the midnight sun keeps the light workable well past midnight. Winter shifts the whole focus to ice: Jökulsárlón’s glacier lagoon, ice caves under Vatnajökull, and long dark nights that turn the aurora into the main subject rather than a bonus. These trips typically run December through March. Autumn closes the cycle with colour instead: birch and dwarf willow turning gold and rust across the valleys and lower highlands, paired with the first clear dark nights for aurora as the midnight sun fades. Jeroen typically runs these trips in September and October, working the shoulder season before snow shuts the highland tracks down.

Photographing Greenland’s Iceberg Fjords by Boat

In the west, Disko Bay and Ilulissat offer calmer water, easier access, and the UNESCO-listed Ilulissat Icefjord calving straight into the bay. Further north and east, Scoresby Sund is the world’s largest fjord system, where icebergs the size of buildings drift past the boats sailing among them. East again, Jeroen runs trips into the Sermilik area near Tasiilaq and Kulusuk: remote fjords with a wilder, more mountainous backdrop. A typical boat-based day means slow passes among icebergs at engine-idle speed, chasing the light as it shifts across the ice, with sudden stops the moment a good composition or a surfacing whale demands one. West and east reward different approaches: the west for reliable iceberg density and easier logistics, the east for scale, remoteness, and drama.

The 2028 Antarctica & South Georgia Photography Expedition

Antarctica’s landscape runs on a different scale entirely: glaciers calving into black water, mountains rising straight out of the sea with no foothills to soften the transition, and icebergs sculpted into shapes that look designed rather than accidental. You feel that scale properly only once you’re standing in a Zodiac beneath it. Jeroen is one of the photography guides on the 2028 Antarctica & South Georgia expedition, which dedicates daily Zodiac landings to photography rather than splitting time across general sightseeing. For landscape work that distinction matters: getting off the ship at the right light, not just the scheduled time, is what separates a photography expedition from a tourism cruise. South Georgia adds a different landscape again, with glacier-draped peaks rising straight from the beach: a contrast to the lower, ice-dominated scenery further south on the Peninsula.

This was the second workshop with Jeroen. Same three customers from last year expressed the desire to do another aerial drone workshop in the Icelandic Highlands. Jeroen managed to fit in an extra custom made workshop for us this July. Jeroen took us to locations we didn’t manage to visit last year. Although many of the highland roads were still unusually closed, Jeroen was very flexible in checking roads and weather, and discussing all options with us. This was again a highly successful workshop. Jeroen was always very helpful giving us drone operating tips and showing us the locations and possible compositions prior to launching our own drones. En route we also had the opportunity to stop briefly at some of the iconic Icelandic waterfalls. Jeroen is very knowledgeable and a very skilled 4X4 driver on the highland roads and river crossings. It was great having everything planned for us in advance. Another highly successful workshop and we all want to go again next year.

I signed up for the puffin workshop after a disappointing experience in Ireland, where the puffins were always too far away to photograph well. That definitely isn’t the case on Grímsey. A great location is only half the equation. The other half is knowing how to photograph it, and that’s where Jeroen truly excels. The highlight for me was the daily image review sessions, discussing editing, cropping, and selecting the strongest frame from a burst. Jeroen has an exceptional eye for the things that matter. I spent 8 days on a workshop led by Jeroen to Western Greenland. My experience was absolutely delightful from end to end. Going the Extra Mile... This was the second of Jeroen’s drone workshops I have attended. That in itself should tell you how good he is. This workshop was held under the most difficult conditions, with the aftermath of hurricane Erin sweeping across Iceland, resulting in very high winds, rain and road closures. Despite that, not a minute of our time in Iceland was wasted, as Jeroen took us from one superb location to another, flexing plans around the weather. Flying drones in high winds and rain can be difficult, but Jeroen’s expertise made us all feel calm and able to fly anywhere. If it wasn’t enough to find suitable locations in the worst of conditions, Jeroen also drove a 7-hour round trip to get a replacement drone when mine fell out of the sky. Jeroen was a huge part of what made this trip so successful.
