West Greenland August 2027 Photo Workshop (with Mads Peter Iversen)

Join Mads Peter Iversen & Jeroen Van Nieuwenhove in Ilulissat, the small Greenlandic town that sits right beside the UNESCO Ilulissat Icefjord. The fjord is fed by Sermeq Kujalleq, one of the fastest and most productive glaciers on the planet, which is why the water around town is packed with icebergs the size of apartment blocks – close enough that you watch them drift past over breakfast. West Greenland is one of those places photographers struggle to believe is real until they are standing in front of it. This is the August departure. By mid-August the midnight sun is over and the sun sets behind the ice again, so Disko Bay gets a real sunset, a real sunrise, and hours of low colour in between.

What Can You Expect During This Photo Workshop?
- Photograph the UNESCO Icefjord on five of the six days, in different light each time
- Shoot from land and from privately chartered boats, with the boat schedule built around the light
- Spend an afternoon in Oqaatsut, a tiny settlement north of Ilulissat
- Stand in front of the Eqi glacier, one of the most actively calving glaciers in the world
- Look for humpback whales feeding in the bay
- Shoot the ice through a full golden hour and blue hour, which only comes back this late in the season
- Flights between Iceland & Greenland included (at €1800+ these are expensive and hard to get hold of, which is why they are in the package)
- Accommodation in single rooms included (5 nights), no sharing and no surcharge

Itinerary
Please note that the itinerary is always subject to change depending on the weather conditions we are faced with.
Day 1 (14/08/2027) – Flying To Ilulissat In Greenland From Iceland
We fly in the late afternoon from Keflavík International Airport in Iceland to Ilulissat, the small town sitting next to the UNESCO Icefjord (flight included). Once everyone has checked into the hotel, we head straight back out on foot for a first look at the Icefjord and Disko Bay.
Day 2 (15/08/2027) – Photographing The Ilulissat UNESCO Icefjord
A full day on the Icefjord and Disko Bay, with two separate boat trips to photograph the icebergs from the water. The second runs into the evening, so we are on the water while the sun is at its lowest.
Day 3 (16/08/2027) – Exploring Oqaatsut
We hike out to photograph the Icefjord from land in the morning, then travel north to Oqaatsut, a remote settlement of a few dozen people. There is time to wander the village before we sit down together for lunch at the local restaurant. In the evening we shoot from the shoreline at Disko Bay.
Day 4 (17/08/2027) – Experiencing The Eqi Glacier
A full day excursion to the Eqi glacier, one of the most actively calving glaciers in the world. You tend to hear it before you see it.
Day 5 (18/08/2027) – Final Evening Cruise
Morning and afternoon are spent hiking and photographing the Icefjord from land, before we head back out on the water for a final evening cruise. This is usually the best chance of the week to get the icebergs under a low sun.
Day 6 (19/08/2027) – Photographing The Icefjord Before Flying Back To Iceland
We check out of the hotel in the morning and then have the rest of the day to photograph at the Icefjord for as long as we like. In the early evening we travel to Ilulissat airport and board the flight back to Keflavík International Airport in Iceland (flight included), arriving late in the evening.

What Photography Gear & Clothing Should You Bring?
Photography Gear
- A DSLR or mirrorless camera
- A drone with several spare batteries (optional; the private boats are what make drone work possible here)
- A wide-angle lens in the 16-35mm range
- A zoom lens in the 70-200mm range or more, useful for the whales and for isolating single icebergs
- A mid-range zoom in the 24-70mm range
- Tripod
- Laptop or tablet with editing software if you want to edit your photos on the go. In case we’re unable to fill out the time in the field, we’ll do some editing at our accommodation.
Recommended Clothing
- Layers you can add and drop through the day
- Good hiking boots with grip
- A hat and thin gloves (the evening boat trips get cold once the sun is low)
- Warm mid layers and wool base layers
- A windproof and waterproof shell jacket and trousers

What Are The Physical Requirements?
There are no specific physical requirements for this photo workshop, but you should expect some hiking on the days we shoot from land. The walks to reach the Ilulissat UNESCO Icefjord are short, roughly 2-3 kilometres, on easy trails with uneven ground and a bit of climbing. If you have a medical issue that prevents you from hiking, you will find this workshop difficult.
What Photography Experience Level Should I Have?
Mads & Jeroen welcome all experience levels, from beginners to experienced photographers. With two workshop leaders in a group of ten, there is nearly always someone free to sit down with you, and a mixed group means you learn plenty from the people around you too.
What About Drone Flying On This Photo Workshop?
A drone is not required, but if you plan to bring one you need to be comfortable flying it before you arrive. We take off and land from a small boat regularly, so practise hand launches and hand catches, and get confident navigating your drone, in the months beforehand. You do not need boat experience specifically – Jeroen has been launching and catching drones off these boats since 2023 and will talk you through it on the day. Frequently Asked Questions
How Is The August Departure Different From The July One?
The light. In July the midnight sun is still up and the sun never really leaves, which is its own thing and a good one. By mid-August it sets behind the ice again, around six hours a night below the horizon, so Disko Bay gets a proper sunset, a proper sunrise and hours of low colour in between. If you want the round-the-clock version, that’s the July West Greenland workshop, which is fully booked at the moment but takes waitlist names.
What Does Having Two Workshop Leaders Mean?
Ten photographers, Mads Peter Iversen and Jeroen. On a boat, at the rail, with the light going, one person can’t be in two places. With two of us somebody is nearly always free to stand at your tripod or over your controller at the moment it matters, and you get two very different ways of reading the same iceberg.
Why Are The Flights To Greenland Included?
Keflavík to Ilulissat runs past 1800 Euro a seat and is hard to get hold of at all on the right days. Putting it in the package means the whole group lands together on day one and flies home together on day six. Your international flights to Iceland are still yours to book. Be in Reykjavík the night before if you can.
Will We See Whales?
It’s likely. Disko Bay in August is good whale water, humpbacks are what turn up most, and we’re out on private charters repeatedly instead of once. Wildlife is still wildlife and nobody puts it in writing, but the odds here are about as good as they get.
Can I Fly A Drone In Greenland?
Yes, under Greenland’s rules, which aren’t Iceland’s. Jeroen has written a full piece on flying a drone in Greenland. The practical bit for this trip: we take off and land from a small boat, repeatedly, so hand launching and hand catching want to be second nature before you arrive. Everyone who signs up gets a discount on the Drone Photography Masterclass, and bringing a drone is optional.
What Is The Eqi Glacier Day Like?
A full day out on a boat we’ve chartered to ourselves, to one of the most actively calving glaciers in the world. You tend to hear it before you see it: a crack, then a pause, then a wall of ice going into the water. Packed lunch, and time to sit with it rather than a ten minute stop.
What Is Oqaatsut?
A settlement of a few dozen people north of Ilulissat, where we spend an afternoon and sit down to lunch at the local restaurant. It’s the one boat day that isn’t a private charter, and it’s the part of the week that puts something other than ice in front of the camera. People live and work there.
How And When Do You Pay?
A deposit holds your place. The rest is due on 14 May 2027, three months before the trip starts, and a payment link for it arrives well before then. Nothing is ever taken automatically.
