Today I received an email informing me that I not only won the ‘Seascapes’ Special Award in the International Landscape Photographer Of The Year 2025 awards but I also have two more images that made the selection for the top 101 photographs that make it into their yearly book. All 3 photographs are drone images which I captured last summer. It’s the second time I participate in this competition and I am really honored I received a special prize again together with other commendations. Additionally, I also want to congratulate the overall winners and other commended photographers in the ILPOTY competition.
The Special Award For Seascapes
The image that received me the special award for Seascapes is one I captured during my recent photo workshop in West Greenland. Interestingly enough, I got awarded again with a spiral-shape just like last year’s competition. During one of the stormy days during that photo workshop in West Greenland I had spotted an interesting iceberg just off the shore of Qeqertarsuaq, the small village we were staying at. After a closer inspection with my drone, I noticed how the swells every now and then created a whirlpool-like shape around the sharpest edges of the iceberg. I used 3 of my Mavic 4 Pro batteries to capture this one image after many, many attempts to get the timing and the shape right. This image is not the result of editing trickery but of patience and timing. In a photography competition where compositing is allowed, and quite common among entries, it makes me even prouder to stand out with a real image captured of a real moment out in nature.
Due to the constantly moving element of the ocean water, I captured this photograph as single photograph with the DJI Mavic 4 Pro.
I noticed this whirlpool forming near an iceberg just off the shore in Qeqertarsuaq on Disko Island in Greenland.
Two More Photographs Selected In Top 101
This year I am also proud to share that two other photographs made into the top 101 of the ILPOTY competition. Because of this, they will be included in the yearly International Landscape Photographer of the Year book. Below you can see the two other commended images.
I captured these beautiful river braids along the south coast of Iceland during my first test flight with the Mavic 4 Pro. Conditions were absolute peak, allowing me to capture a framing of this well-photographed location that I hadn’t seen before.
This summer, during a little scouting & exploration mission of my own, I got the most unique conditions in one of my favourite areas of Iceland: the Icelandic Highlands. It took me many, many attempts to get the rainbow circle to line up perfectly with this unusual earthen pattern. The story behind this photograph is probably a great subject for another one of my Behind The Shot blogs. I better get writing!
