## Itinerary

Please note that the itinerary is always subject to change depending on the weather conditions we are faced with.

### Day 1 (01/07/2027) – Flying to Ilulissat (Greenland) from Iceland

We fly in the late afternoon from Keflavik International Airport in Iceland to Ilulissat, a small town located next to the UNESCO Icefjord (flight included). After checking into the hotel, we will explore the Icefjord and Disko Bay on foot.

### Day 2 (02/07/2027) – Photographing the Ilulissat UNESCO Icefjord

We further explore the Icefjord and Disko Bay with two separate boat trips to photograph the icebergs from the ocean, one of which will be in the evening.

### Day 3 (03/07/2027) – Exploring Oqaatsut

In the morning, we hike to photograph the Icefjord from land, after which we travel to Oqaatsut, a remote village north of Ilulissat. There we get to explore the town, after which we meet up at the local restaurant for an excellent lunch. In the evening, we will shoot from the shoreline at Disko Bay.

### Day 4 (04/07/2027) – Experiencing the Eqi Glacier

On this fourth day, we have planned a day excursion to the Eqi glacier, which is one of the most actively calving glaciers in the world.

### Day 5 (05/07/2027) – Final Evening Cruise

In the morning & afternoon, we hike to photograph the Icefjord from land after which we will head back out on the water for a final evening cruise.

### Day 6 (06/07/2027) – Photographing The Icefjord Before Flying Back To Iceland

We check out of the hotel in the morning and have the rest of the day to photograph to our heart’s content at the Icefjord. In the early evening, we travel to Ilulissat airport before boarding our flight back to Keflavík International Airport in Iceland (flight included) in the late evening. We will arrive back in Iceland right before midnight.Join the waitlist[divider line_type=”No Line” custom_height=”500px”]

## What Are The Physical Requirements?

Overall, there are **no specific physical requirements** for this photo workshop. However, it’s important to note that **there will be some hiking** when we shoot from land. The hikes to access the Ilulissat UNESCO Icefjord are fairly short (2-3 kilometres). The trails are overall easy, with uneven ground, but have some inclination. For this reason those with medical issues that prohibit hiking, might have some difficulty with this workshop.

## What Photography Experience Level Should I Have?

**Jeroen welcomes all experience levels**, from beginners to experienced photographers. A good mix of experience levels means everyone can learn from each other.

## What About Drone Flying On This Photo Workshop?

While it is not required to have a drone on this workshop, it is important to know that** if you intend on bringing a drone**, it is vital you are already well practiced at controlling your drone. Due to the nature of the workshop, we will take off & land from a small boat frequently. It is therefore advised to practice takeoff/landing from your hand, controlling & navigating your drone before the workshop. It is not necessary to know how to takeoff/land from a boat prior to the workshop. Workshop participants also get a discount to the [Drone Photography Masterclass](https://jvn.photo/drone-photography-masterclass/) after signing up.Join the waitlist

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Why Are The Flights To Greenland Included?

Keflavík to Ilulissat runs past 1800 Euro a seat and is hard to get hold of at all on the right days. Putting it in the package means the whole group lands together on day one and flies home together on day six, instead of half the workshop waiting on a connection somewhere. Your international flights to Iceland are still yours to book.

### How Do You Get Around Once You Are There?

Mostly by boat. The private charters are in the price: out into Disko Bay and along the Ilulissat Icefjord, and the full day to the Eqi glacier where the calving front is. Oqaatsut is the exception, reached on a scheduled boat instead of one of ours. The rest is on foot: the walks out to the Ilulissat Icefjord are 2 to 3 kilometres on easy but uneven trails with a bit of climb. Having a boat to ourselves is the difference between photographing an iceberg and photographing it past somebody else’s head.

### Will We See Whales?

Usually, not every time. Disko Bay in July is good whale water and we’re out on it repeatedly, which is the part we can actually control. Wildlife is still wildlife, and nobody can sell you a sighting.

### Can I Fly A Drone In Greenland?

Yes, under Greenland’s rules, which aren’t Iceland’s. Jeroen has written a full piece on [flying a drone in Greenland](https://jvn.photo/flying-a-drone-in-greenland/). The practical bit for this trip: we take off and land from a small boat, repeatedly, so hand launching and hand catching want to be second nature before you arrive. If they’re not yet, start with the [Drone Photography Masterclass](https://jvn.photo/drone-photography-masterclass/). Participants get a discount on it after signing up.

### How Big Are The Icebergs?

Some of them are the size of a whole apartment building. The ice comes down the Ilulissat Icefjord and runs aground in the bay right in front of the town, so the whole ocean around Ilulissat is full of it. Getting that scale into a photograph is most of what we work on, and it’s harder than it sounds.

### What Is Oqaatsut?

A small Greenlandic settlement north of Ilulissat, where we spend an afternoon and eat lunch. It’s the one boat day that isn’t a private charter. People live and work there. It’s the part of the week that puts something other than ice in front of the camera.

### How Cold Is It In July?

Cool, wet and windy on the water. Summer gloves, a shell that actually stops wind, proper hiking boots, layers you can drop. Jeroen has written a [detailed outdoor apparel and photography gear guide](https://jvn.photo/outdoor-apparel-photography-gear-photo-workshop/) for exactly this question. Bring travel insurance too. On this trip it’s a requirement, not a suggestion.

### This Workshop Is Full. What Are My Options?

Join the waitlist below and you’ll hear first if a spot opens or new dates go up. The [Greenland workshops page](https://jvn.photo/photo-workshops/greenland/) has everything else that’s running. There’s also [an East Greenland workshop with James Popsys](https://jvn.photo/photo-workshops/east-greenland-james-popsys-2027/) from 6 to 13 September 2027, based in Tasiilaq. Jeroen writes up each edition afterwards too: the [2025 West Greenland report](https://jvn.photo/whales-icebergs-photography-adventure-west-greenland/) and the [2024 Disko Bay report](https://jvn.photo/frozen-worlds-greenland-disko-bay/) will tell you whether this is your kind of week.
