## Landscape Photography Workshops in Iceland

Jeroen Van Nieuwenhove is a landscape and aerial photographer based in Iceland, and he runs small-group **landscape photography workshops in [Iceland](https://jvn.photo/photo-workshops/iceland/)** in three seasons. In winter the group works the South Coast: Jökulsárlón, the ice caves under Vatnajökull and, on clear nights, the aurora. In autumn the trip heads west and north to Snæfellsnes, Hvítserkur and the north coast. Summer is for drones: three pilots fly the interior Highlands while the tracks are open. Every workshop starts and ends in Reykjavík, lasts 8 or 9 days and takes between 3 and 10 photographers. Beginners are welcome on every trip except the Highlands one, where you need to own and fly a drone.

Jeroen also leads landscape trips by boat in [East and West Greenland](https://jvn.photo/photo-workshops/greenland/) and guides on the [2028 Antarctica & South Georgia expedition](https://jvn.photo/photo-workshops/antarctica/). Both are further down this page.

For several years, Jeroen has been organising photography workshops to help participants improve their landscape photography skills. Below you can also find testimonies & reviews of previous photo workshop experiences or you can [read about previous photo workshops on Jeroen’s blog](https://jvn.photo/category/workshops/).

## Which Nature & Landscape Photography Workshops Does Jeroen Run?

## Which Season Suits Your Iceland Landscape Photography?

Summer opens the **[volcanic highlands](https://jvn.photo/photo-workshops/summer/)** completely: interior tracks that stay closed the rest of the year swing open, and near-endless daylight around the solstice creates shooting windows that simply don’t exist at other times of year. Highland trips typically run June through August, when the interior roads are open and the midnight sun keeps the light workable well past midnight. Winter shifts the whole focus to ice: **[Jökulsárlón’s glacier lagoon](https://jvn.photo/photo-workshops/winter/)**, ice caves under Vatnajökull, and long dark nights that turn the aurora into the main subject rather than a bonus. These trips typically run December through March. Autumn closes the cycle with colour instead: birch and dwarf willow turning gold and rust across the valleys and lower highlands, paired with the first clear dark nights for aurora as the midnight sun fades. Jeroen typically runs these trips in September and October, working the shoulder season before snow shuts the highland tracks down.

## Photographing Greenland’s Iceberg Fjords by Boat

In the west, Disko Bay and Ilulissat offer calmer water, easier access, and the UNESCO-listed **[Ilulissat Icefjord](https://jvn.photo/photo-workshops/greenland/)** calving straight into the bay. Further north and east, **Scoresby Sund** is the world’s largest fjord system, where icebergs the size of buildings drift past the boats sailing among them. East again, Jeroen runs trips into the Sermilik area near Tasiilaq and Kulusuk: remote fjords with a wilder, more mountainous backdrop. A typical boat-based day means slow passes among icebergs at engine-idle speed, chasing the light as it shifts across the ice, with sudden stops the moment a good composition or a surfacing whale demands one. West and east reward different approaches: the west for reliable iceberg density and easier logistics, the east for scale, remoteness, and drama.

Compared to cruise ships and town-based day-trip operators in Greenland, the workshops can run light-led schedules around single fjord systems rather than rotate through multiple ports.

## The 2028 Antarctica & South Georgia Photography Expedition

Antarctica’s landscape runs on a different scale entirely: glaciers calving into black water, mountains rising straight out of the sea with no foothills to soften the transition, and icebergs sculpted into shapes that look designed rather than accidental. You feel that scale properly only once you’re standing in a Zodiac beneath it. Jeroen is one of the photography guides on the **[2028 Antarctica & South Georgia expedition](https://jvn.photo/photo-workshops/antarctica/)**, which dedicates **daily Zodiac landings** to photography rather than splitting time across general sightseeing. For landscape work that distinction matters: getting off the ship at the right light, not just the scheduled time, is what separates a photography expedition from a tourism cruise. South Georgia adds a different landscape again, with glacier-draped peaks rising straight from the beach: a contrast to the lower, ice-dominated scenery further south on the Peninsula.

Compared to general expedition cruises, a 2028 Antarctica photo workshop dedicates daily Zodiac landings to wildlife and landscape photography rather than splitting time across general tourism.

## Reviews From Previous Photo Workshops & Photo Tours

## Frequently Asked Questions

Below are a few of the most commonly asked questions people have before considering to join a photo workshop.

### What Can I Expect From A Photo Workshop?

A photo workshop combines expert photography instruction with once-in-a-lifetime travel experiences. Participants spend their days photographing dramatic landscapes such as glaciers, volcanoes, waterfalls, and wildlife while learning composition, camera settings, and storytelling techniques in the field. You will receive personal guidance, hands-on feedback, and local insight to help you elevate your photography in truly unique locations.

### What Kind Of Photography Will We Focus On During The Workshops?

Each photo workshop offers a variety of subjects, including **landscape photography, wildlife and bird photography, and drone photography**. Some trips focus on specific themes – such as puffins, Arctic foxes, or drone photography – while others provide a broader opportunity to explore nature and storytelling through your camera.

### Do I Need To Be An Experienced Photographer To Join A Workshop?

All experience levels are welcome. Whether you are a beginner learning the fundamentals or an advanced photographer looking to refine your skills, these workshops are designed to adapt to each participant’s needs. Group sizes are kept small so that everyone receives individual attention and support, regardless of skill level.

### Why Should I Join A Guided Photo Workshop Instead Of Traveling On My Own?

Joining a **photo workshop** is one of the fastest ways to improve your skills and take your photography to the next level. Instead of traveling alone and guessing where the best locations are, you will be guided by professional photographers who know the landscapes, the light, and the wildlife. A workshop not only teaches you **composition, camera settings, and creative techniques**, but also gives you access to lesser-known locations and the chance to shoot at the perfect times of day.

If that didn’t convince you, then maybe these [5 reasons how a photo tour can level up your photography](https://jvn.photo/5-reasons-how-a-photo-tour-can-help-level-up-your-photography/) can help you decide to join one of Jeroen’s trips!

### What Gear Should I Bring On A Photo Workshop?

Preparing for a **photo workshop** isn’t just about your camera: the right **outdoor clothing and photography gear** can make or break your experience. Conditions in places like Iceland, Greenland, and Antarctica can change quickly, so being properly equipped ensures you stay comfortable, safe, and ready to capture the moment.
