*The organising, fully licensed, travel agency behind this photography workshop is [Nonni Travel](https://www.nonnitravel.is/). The applicable terms & conditions can be found on [a separate page](https://nonnitravel.is/terms-and-conditions-for-photo-workshops-private-tours/).* *The package price is in Icelandic Króna and equals +- 8050 Euro with the exchange rate of 23/07/2026.***Winter is when the Arctic fox is at its most photogenic.** The summer brown gives way to a thick winter coat: some foxes turn almost pure white, others deepen into the smoky “blue” morph that Iceland is known for, all of it set against snow and the low arctic light. This workshop is built entirely around that. Over eight days we travel deep into the Icelandic West Fjords to [photograph the Arctic fox](https://jvn.photo/photo-workshops/arctic-fox/) (*Vulpes lagopus*) in its winter fur, using the remote Kvíar Lodge as our base inside the Hornstrandir Nature Reserve. Hornstrandir holds the largest population of Arctic foxes in Iceland, which stacks the odds firmly in our favour… though, as with all wildlife, nothing is ever guaranteed.

- A small group, **limited to just 6 photographers** (plus Jeroen as workshop leader and a local guide who knows Hornstrandir intimately)

- **Five nights full board in single rooms with shared facilities** at the remote Kvíar Lodge, deep inside the Hornstrandir Nature Reserve

- **Two nights in a single room with private facilities** at a hotel in Ísafjörður, with breakfast & dinner

- A full **buffer day** in Ísafjörður for photography presentations and to build in weather margin before we cross to Hornstrandir

- **Return domestic flights** between Reykjavík & Ísafjörður included

- **Eight days, seven nights**: meet on the afternoon of 19 February 2027, return on the evening of 26 February 2027

## Why Winter?

The Arctic fox (*Vulpes lagopus*) is the only land mammal native to Iceland. In winter it grows a dense coat in two colour forms: the white morph, and the darker “blue” morph that stays smoky grey-brown year round and is unusually common in Iceland. Hornstrandir, in the far north-west, is uninhabited in winter and protected as a nature reserve. That is part of why its foxes are more relaxed around people than foxes elsewhere, and part of why it holds one of the country’s densest fox populations.

One thing up front, because it matters and it is worth asking any operator about: we do not bait. No food, no scraps, no carcass put out to hold a fox where the light is nice. We sit still, we stay quiet and we let the foxes come to us.

If you want the longer version of all of this, I have written a full guide to [photographing Arctic foxes in Iceland](https://jvn.photo/photographing-arctic-foxes-in-iceland/), covering both seasons.

## Itinerary

Please note that the itinerary is always subject to change depending on the weather conditions we are faced with.

### Day 1 (19/02/2027) – Departure from Reykjavík & Traveling to Hornstrandir

We meet in the late afternoon at the domestic airport in downtown Reykjavík where we board a flight to Ísafjörður, a small town in the West Fjords of Iceland, where we spend two nights (single room accommodation).

### Day 2 (20/02/2027) – A Buffer Day in Ísafjörður

On this buffer day, we spend time in Ísafjörður where Jeroen will give a few photography-focused presentations as we wait to depart for Hornstrandir the next day. Weather depending, it is also possible to walk around the town.

### Day 3 (21/02/2027) – Crossing the Ísafjarðardjúp to Hornstrandir

In the morning, we will travel by boat over Ísafjarðardjúp to Kvíar Lodge in Hornstrandir, where we will settle in and get familiar with our stay for the next days.

### Day 4-7 (22/02/2027 – 25/02/2027) – Hornstrandir Nature Reserve

During this workshop we will explore a very small section of a remote area called Hornstrandir. Hornstrandir is a Nature Reserve which is difficult to access but using Kvíar Lodge as a base of operations, we have a good chance at seeing and photographing the Arctic Fox in its own habitat during winter time.

### Day 8 (26/02/2027) – Return to Reykjavík

We leave Kvíar Lodge and Hornstrandir behind after lunch. After returning back to the harbour in Ísafjörður, we will board the late afternoon flight back to Reykjavík at the airport.Sign up to this photo workshop[divider line_type=”No Line” custom_height=”500px” custom_height_phone=”300px”]

## Our Accommodation: Kvíar Lodge in Hornstrandir

Our home on this workshop is **the remote Kvíar Lodge in Hornstrandir**. Kvíar was a farm in Kvíadalur Valley, a beautiful setting at the edge of the water with panoramic views over the big Jökulfirðir Bay. With history of habitation since the 14th. century, you can clearly see signs of turf houses and stone walls around the farm.

Kvíar is located on the peninsula between the fjords of Lónafjörður and Veiðileysufjörður. In the house, there is a wood burning sauna, heating, shared toilet & shower facilities, electricity to charge equipment, a hide for watching wildlife and more.

## What Are The Physical Requirements?

**It’s important to note that there will be hiking in winter conditions on this trip.** The area we are hiking through can be uneven and slippery. For this reason those with medical issues that prohibit such hikes, might have a difficult time with this workshop.

## What Photography Experience Level Should I Have?

**We welcome all experience levels**, going from beginners to experienced photographers. A good mix of experience levels means we can also learn from each other.Sign up to this photo workshop

## Frequently Asked Questions

### When Is The Best Time To Photograph Arctic Foxes In Iceland?

Late winter. From roughly February to March the foxes are in full winter coat and the ground around them is white, which is exactly what this workshop is built for. Summer is a different trip altogether: that is when the cubs are out at the den. Both seasons are covered on the [Arctic fox workshops page](https://jvn.photo/photo-workshops/arctic-fox/).

### Are We Guaranteed To See Arctic Foxes?

No, and anyone who guarantees you wildlife is selling something. What we can say is this: Hornstrandir holds the largest population of Arctic foxes in Iceland, Kvíar Lodge sits right in their territory, and we have five nights there to work with.

### Do You Bait The Foxes?

No. No food put out, no scraps, no carcass dragged into good light to hold a fox in place. Baiting does happen in Icelandic fox photography, so it is a fair thing to ask before you book with anyone, me included. What we do instead is sit still, keep the group capped at six and let the foxes decide how close they want to come. It is slower, and it is the only way I am willing to work.

### How Do You Get To Hornstrandir In Winter?

There are no roads. We fly from Reykjavík to Ísafjörður, spend two nights there, then cross the Ísafjarðardjúp by boat to Kvíar Lodge. That crossing depends entirely on the weather, which is exactly why a buffer day is built into the itinerary.

### How Cold Does It Get & What Should You Pack?

Cold, wet and windy, often all three within the same hour. Layers, proper waterproof boots, a hat, gloves and a shell that genuinely blocks wind are non-negotiable. Jeroen has written a full [outdoor and photography gear guide](https://jvn.photo/outdoor-apparel-photography-gear-photo-workshop/) for photo workshops, plus a separate piece on [how he packs his tech bag](https://jvn.photo/photography-tech-photo-workshops-2026/), and both are worth reading before you start buying things.

### What Camera & Lens Do You Need?

Any DSLR or mirrorless body will do. For glass, 100-400mm is the sensible starting point and more reach helps with foxes that keep their distance. Jeroen has written about several long lenses in the field: the [Canon RF 200-800mm on Arctic foxes](https://jvn.photo/photographing-arctic-foxes-with-canon-rf-200-800mm-f6-3-9-is-usm/), the [RF 100-500mm five years on](https://jvn.photo/review-why-i-love-my-canon-rf-100-500mm-f4-5-7-1-l-is-usm/), and [whether the RF 70-200mm f/2.8 Z holds up for wildlife](https://jvn.photo/canon-rf-70-200mm-f2-8-z-wildlife-photography/).

### Who Leads The Workshop & How Big Is The Group?

Jeroen leads it himself, alongside a local guide who knows Hornstrandir far better than any visiting photographer could. The group is capped at six, and that is a deliberate choice: six people can move quietly through fox territory, twelve cannot.

### How And When Do You Pay?

A deposit holds your place. The rest is due on **19 November 2026**, three months before the trip starts, and a payment link for it arrives well before then. Nothing is ever taken automatically.

The payments are handled by Nonni Travel, the organising travel agency, under [their terms and conditions](https://nonnitravel.is/terms-and-conditions-for-photo-workshops-private-tours/).
