## Photo Workshops & Expeditions in Antarctica & South Georgia

**Antarctica is the ultimate frontier for photographers.** A place where towering icebergs, vast glaciers, and rare & undisturbed wildlife come together in a landscape like no other. The **Antarctica photo workshops** Jeroen co-leads are designed for photographers who want to capture the raw beauty of the White Continent under the guidance of an experienced team of instructors. From dramatic views of sculpted ice to intimate encounters with penguins, seals, and whales, you will explore remote locations few ever reach and return with a portfolio as unforgettable as the journey itself. With expert tuition, and access to breathtaking sites, this is more than a workshop – it’s the photographic adventure of a lifetime.

For several years, Jeroen has been organising photography workshops to seek out these remote opportunities. Below you can also find testimonies & reviews of previous photo workshop experiences or you can [read about previous photo workshops on Jeroen’s blog](https://jvn.photo/category/workshops/).

## Upcoming Photo Workshops in Antarctica, the Antarctica Peninsula & South Georgia

## Why Book A Dedicated Antarctica Photo Expedition?

**A dedicated Antarctica photo expedition offers far more than a standard Antarctica cruise.** It is designed for photographers who want expert guidance, hands-on tuition, and the best possible opportunities to create outstanding images in one of the most extraordinary places on Earth.

From the moment the expedition begins, the journey is photography-focused. From sunrise until sunset, there is almost always something happening to photograph, whether it is dramatic polar landscapes, towering icebergs, whales, seals, seabirds, or busy penguin colonies. Every day is built around making the most of the photographic opportunities Antarctica provides.

Unlike a regular cruise, dedicated photo expeditions include experienced photography leaders who help participants improve throughout the journey. That can mean guidance with camera settings, composition, tracking wildlife, storytelling, or understanding how to work with Antarctica’s changing light and weather conditions. Whether shooting from the deck of the ship, cruising through ice-filled fjords on Zodiacs, or landing ashore at penguin rookeries, support is always close by.

During sea crossings and quieter moments, the experience continues with photography lectures, editing sessions, image reviews, and practical workshops designed to help participants return home with stronger images and new skills.

For photographers who want more than sightseeing, a dedicated Antarctica photography expedition is the ideal way to experience the White Continent while improving their craft and creating a portfolio of unforgettable images.

## What Does Jeroen Photograph On The Antarctic Peninsula?

The Antarctic Peninsula is the heart of the voyage and where most shooting days happen. Jeroen is **one of the photography guides on the [2028 Antarctica & South Georgia expedition](https://jvn.photo/photo-workshops/antarctica-south-georgia-photo-expedition-2028/)**, which works the channels and bays along the Peninsula’s western coast, where mountains rise straight out of the sea and glaciers calve into black water. Days run on **Zodiac cruises and shore landings**: gentoo and Adélie penguin rookeries at places like Cuverville Island, humpback whales feeding among the ice, and leopard and crabeater seals hauled out on the floes. The light is the real subject, working through pink dawns and long golden evenings across the Gerlache Strait and the Lemaire Channel. It is dense, varied shooting where a single Zodiac outing can move from grand landscape to close wildlife in minutes.

## What Makes South Georgia Special For Photographers?

South Georgia sits far out in the Southern Ocean, and reaching it is part of what makes the **[2028 expedition](https://jvn.photo/photo-workshops/antarctica-south-georgia-photo-expedition-2028/)** so rare. The island is famous for scale: **king penguin colonies that run into the hundreds of thousands**, beaches crowded with elephant and fur seals, and glacier-draped peaks that rise straight from the shore. For a photographer it is a different challenge to the Peninsula, less about ice and more about the sheer density of life filling the frame from foreground to horizon. Weather and swell decide which landings are possible, so the itinerary stays flexible and every landing is treated as its own opportunity. Alongside the wildlife, the old whaling stations add a stark historical layer few other places can offer.

## Frequently Asked Questions

Below are a few of the most commonly asked questions people have before considering to join a photo workshop in Antarctica.

### When Does the Antarctica Expedition Run, and Where Does It Go?

From 27 February to 17 March 2028, twenty days in total. It starts in Punta Arenas in Chile and flies to King George Island in about an hour and 45 minutes, weather permitting, then sails the Antarctic Peninsula, the Weddell Sea and Elephant Island before crossing the Scotia Sea to South Georgia. It ends in Ushuaia in Argentina. Flying in means no sea crossing on the way down.

### Who Leads It, and Which Ship?

The photography team is Jeroen, Nigel Danson, James Popsys, Mads Peter Iversen, Dani Connor, Jack Lodge and Rhiannon Lawler, aboard the Greg Mortimer, run by Aurora Expeditions. Each day the expedition team and the photographers plan around the weather, the ice and the wildlife. Jeroen wrote up the 2024 and 2026 Antarctica expeditions on his blog if you want to see what a season actually looks like.

### What Happens If the Weather Changes the Plan?

It will, at some point. Antarctic itineraries are set day by day around weather, ice and wildlife, and some landings won’t be possible on the day. The upside of a flexible plan is that when something exceptional turns up, like whales at peak activity or penguins porpoising past the Zodiac, there’s time to stay and photograph it.

### How Many People Are on Board?

The departure is limited to 100 passengers, and it’s built around photography rather than being a general cruise. Zodiacs carry eight guests each, so there’s room to move and work with your gear, and most days include two outings: a Zodiac cruise among the ice or a landing ashore.

### Why Isn’t the Price Listed?

The pricing structure behind this voyage is too complex to reduce to one number on a page. Use the enquiry form on the expedition page and you’ll get a proper quote for your situation.
