Join Nigel Danson, James Popsys, Mads Peter Iversen, Jeroen Van Nieuwenhove, Dani Connor, Jack Lodge and Rhiannon Lawler on **a once-in-a-lifetime photography expedition over 20 days to Antarctica & South Georgia** following Shackleton’s miraculous adventure aboard Endurance.

## Exploring The Remote Antarctic Peninsula, Elephant Island & South Georgia

This** epic photography expedition** follows in the footsteps of Shackleton’s legendary Endurance voyage, offering a 20-day immersion into the raw wilderness of the Antarctic Peninsula, the Weddell Sea, Elephant Island, and South Georgia. Exploring the Southern Ocean, Antarctica, and the Subantarctic Islands feels like stepping inside a BBC nature documentary, especially as the southern summer draws to a close and the light softens into extraordinary pastels, wrapping icebergs, mountains, and wildlife in a glow found only in the world’s most remote polar regions. **It really doesn’t get better than this!**

Wildlife encounters here are intensely personal. Penguins waddle past your boots, seals lounge on sculpted blue ice, and whales surface with breathtaking proximity. This is a rare world where animals are indifferent rather than cautious, allowing photographers to capture moments that simply don’t exist in more crowded destinations.

This photography adventure of the Antarctic Peninsula & South Georgia is **designed for photographers of all levels** who want to push their craft in one of the most photogenic regions on the planet. From the vast, towering peaks of the Antarctic Peninsula to the epic icebergs of the Weddell Sea, and onward to the historic drama of Elephant Island and the wildlife-rich landscapes of South Georgia, every landing unfolds with new light, fresh compositions, and stories that ask to be told through your lens.

## Itinerary

Please note that traveling in the Antarctic is heavily subject to the weather conditions we are faced with. Plans may therefore change and specific locations may not be possible to visit. However, this is part of the adventure when exploring a place very few people get to explore.

### Day 1 – Arrive in Punta Arenas (Chile)

Arrive in Punta Arenas where an Aurora Expeditions representative will transfer you to the hotel. Overlooking the Strait of Magellan, Punta Arenas has a rich maritime history shaped by explorers, sailors, and settlers. Today the city offers a lively mix of restaurants and bars where you can enjoy local or international cuisine. At 7:00 pm we gather for an expedition briefing to review tomorrow’s flight to King George Island and important IAATO visitor guidelines for Antarctica.

### Day 2 – Fly to King George Island & Embark

This morning we transfer to Punta Arenas airport for our charter flight to King George Island in Antarctica (weather permitting). The flight takes approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes. Upon arrival, the expedition team will welcome you and assist with a Zodiac transfer to the vessel. After settling into your cabin, we begin essential safety briefings.

Flights require clear weather for safe operations. If conditions prevent flying today, contingency plans will be implemented. Your safety is always our priority.

### Days 3-7 – Antarctic Peninsula

Arriving in Antarctica is unforgettable: your first iceberg, the crisp polar air, and the silence of the White Continent create a moment that stays with you forever. Each day our expedition leaders and photography guides design the itinerary based on weather, ice conditions, and wildlife sightings. Flexibility is essential, allowing us to spend more time photographing exceptional moments when they arise.

Most days include two excursions: Zodiac cruises among towering icebergs or landings on remote shores. Watch for whales, seals, and porpoising penguins as glaciers creak and calve into the sea. Our smaller Zodiac groups give photographers more room to move and work comfortably with their gear. Ashore you may explore penguin colonies, hike to scenic viewpoints, or wander wildlife-rich beaches.

Between excursions, enjoy lectures, photography workshops, and time on deck watching for whales or admiring dramatic polar scenery. For the brave, the traditional polar plunge may also be offered.

### Day 8 – Weddell Sea

Entering the remote Weddell Sea is a highlight for polar explorers. Our journey begins in Antarctic Sound, where volcanic peaks rise above penguin colonies and sculpted icebergs drift through icy channels. We push as far east as conditions allow into the Weddell Sea, famous for vast sea ice and enormous tabular icebergs. The region is rich in wildlife, including crabeater and Weddell seals, seabirds, and krill-feeding whales. These historic waters are also where Sir Ernest Shackleton’s ship Endurance sank in 1915.

### Day 9 – Antarctic Sound & Elephant Island

Today we sail toward Elephant Island, where 22 of Shackleton’s crew survived months under two overturned lifeboats after their ship was crushed by sea ice. The incredible survival story of Shackleton’s expedition may be explored in onboard presentations as we visit this remote and historically significant location.

### Day 10 – Elephant Island

We plan to cruise along Elephant Island’s rugged coastline, passing Cape Valentine where Shackleton’s men first landed before continuing toward Point Wild. Weather permitting, we may take a Zodiac cruise or landing at this historic site. This area is also excellent for spotting whales feeding on krill as they prepare for migration.

### Days 11-12 – Scotia Sea

After our Antarctic adventures, we sail across the Scotia Sea toward South Georgia. This route follows Shackleton’s legendary 17-day open-boat journey in the James Caird as he sought rescue for his stranded crew. Sea days provide time to relax, attend lectures about South Georgia’s wildlife and history, or simply enjoy the Southern Ocean. Keep watch for humpback, fin, and blue whales, along with albatross, petrels, and other seabirds gliding across the waves.

### Days 13-16 – South Georgia

South Georgia is one of the most wildlife-rich islands on Earth. Though only 176 km long, it features towering mountains, massive glaciers, and vast colonies of penguins and seals. We explore by Zodiac and on foot, visiting king penguin colonies, seal haul-outs, and dramatic coastal landscapes. You may also see historic whaling stations and Shackleton’s grave at Grytviken. Optional hikes may include the famous Shackleton route from Fortuna Bay to Stromness, retracing the final stage of his remarkable crossing of South Georgia. Throughout our time here, we continue searching for wildlife, photographing spectacular scenery, and enjoying the island’s rich history.

### Days 17-19 – At Sea

Leaving South Georgia, we sail toward Ushuaia while seabirds glide effortlessly alongside the ship. Weather permitting, we may pass the dramatic Shag Rocks before continuing across the Southern Ocean. Enjoy your final sea days attending lectures, relaxing on deck, or sharing stories with fellow travellers. On the final evening we celebrate with the Captain’s farewell dinner.

### Day 20 – Disembark in Ushuaia (Argentina)

Early this morning we sail through the Beagle Channel before arriving in Ushuaia. Transfers will be arranged for guests staying in Aurora-booked accommodations or nearby hotels. Guests with flights before 12:30 pm will be transferred directly to the airport, while later departures may explore Ushuaia before an afternoon transfer.[image_with_animation image_url=”1195663″ image_size=”full” max_width=”100%” max_width_mobile=”default” animation_type=”entrance” animation=”None” animation_movement_type=”transform_y” hover_animation=”none” alignment=”center” border_radius=”none” box_shadow=”none” image_loading=”default” margin_bottom=”40px” margin_top=”20px”]
